Safety Measurement System
Also: SMS, CSA, BASICs
The Safety Measurement System is the FMCSA tool, part of its Compliance, Safety, Accountability program, that organizes roadside-inspection and crash data into categories called BASICs, such as unsafe driving and hours-of-service compliance. Scores are relative to peer carriers and can flag a company for intervention. The data comes from inspections, violations, and crashes tied to the carrier’s USDOT number.
